If you find that your piano will not stay in tune, then you should consider a restoration.
Also if you consider the piano to be of value, either monetarily or nostalgically, then a restoration will rejuvenate it and increase it's value.
In many cases a complete restoration will cost much less than the price of a new piano!
Complete restoration includes refinishing.
Rebuilding
The rebuilding process is essential to the tone quality of the piano.
The piano action is reconditioned and the pin block refurbished.
Installations of new hammers might be recommended and will improve the tone of the piano.
Existing hammers will be shaved and refurbished.
All rebuildings vary due to the severity of the problems.
Refinishing
In order for the restoration to be called a "complete restoration", the piano must be refinished.
The refinishing process includes stripping the old finish, sanding the piano, applying multiple coats of stain and lacquer,
and applying a new fallboard and soundboard decals as well as installing new hardware.
